Career Biographies

Q. What is the reading level?
A. Grade level 7 thru 14, in a lively short story newspaper style format with colorful photos.

Q. How does a career biography let the reader career-shadow?
A. Each career biography follows one person through their everyday workday. The career biography mirrors the real-life, school-to-work path of each subject, detailing each individual's career success story from High School to present. It also helps career information come alive and presents career facts more effectively (and less boringly) than just job facts and statistics.

Q. What's contained in a biography?
A. Each career biography shows
  • Educational planning and background
  • Job progression
  • Current Job
  • Likes and dislikes about their career
  • Lifestyle
  • Future Plans

The Data File section gives a universal overview of the career and shows where to go to get more information about a career.

Q. Do you have non-traditional careers?
A. Yes. We try to do a combination of career biographies, covering traditional and non-traditional careers as well as a wide variety of everything in between.

Q. Can I use these materials in my careers classes?
A. Yes. All the biographies can be used in a number of areas, including your careers class, the library, guidance office or classroom. The career biographies go beyond facts and statistics. Because they are entertaining, down-to-earth and fun to read, career biographies help hold students' interest.

Q. How many career biographies are in a book?
A. There are 25 career biographies per book, 7 books per series for a total of 175 different careers in each series. Vocational Biographies publishes a completely new series each year.

Series

Q. Are all the careers in Series C "C Careers"?
A. No. Each series covers a vast array of traditional careers as well as non-traditional careers. Using letters to identify the series was started back in 1969 as a way of tracking, and has carried on ever since.

Q. What do those numbers after the Series' letter mean?
A. When we're talking about just one book, the number shows which of the seven books it is. For example "G-1," means it's in the first book of Series G.

When referring to an entire series of seven books, the number behind the letter is the year in which the series was published. For example, G-03 is the series completed in the 2002-2003 school year.

Q. What's in a series?
A. Each series contains 7 books and 175 different career biographies.

Q. How do you update?
A. Each year we drop off the oldest series in the Career Library and we add the most recent series.

The editor reviews each career in the series. If the career is still pertinent to today's job market, she will put the title back into the writer's list. We do not update all career biographies, nor do we just reprint the biography itself. If a career is redone, a new writer in a different area finds a new subject, and our editorial staff researches today's career. So, even if you use the older career biographies that have been dropped, and they have been redone, you will have two different perspectives on the same occupation. There are so many new developing careers that we do not redo all of the dropped career biographies. That way we can stay abreast of the latest careers available.

Q. What is the Subscription/Updating Series?
A. We used to publish 7 books (one complete series) throughout the year, and shipped the books, as they were published, to our subscribers.

Vocational Biographies does not offer the Subscription/Updating Series at this time. Instead, we have an exciting, new, web-based service in development which will soon provide up-to-date career information.

Questions? Please contact us at careers@vocbio.com  .

Q. Do you have an index covering all the series?
A. Each year, we publish an index for the Comprehensive Career Library. It contains the 5 current series. If you have a specific request to cover more than the 5 series, we can create a custom print or electronic version for a nominal charge.

The Career Library, Pathways, and More

Q. What is a Career Library?
A. It is the most complete career resource available in print. The Comprehensive Career Library contains easy-to-read career biographies that cover most of today's career options.

Q. Are the Pathways included in the Career Library?
A. Yes. Pathways selections are taken from the Comprehensive Career Library and assembled in 3-ring binders.

Q. What Products are Best?
A. That depends on what you need. The best, most complete, career information resource you'll find is the online version of the Comprehensive Career Library, VocBiosOnline.com, lets you click your way to any career biography in 10 seconds or less. Cross Referencing and Filing

Q. Do you cross reference with the OOH?
A. Yes. A universal overview of each career is profiled in the DATA FILE Section of the career biography. This information is similar to career information found in the OOH.

Q. Do you cross reference with the major cluster areas?
A. Yes. We use the cluster areas developed by the U.S. Office of Education. Each career biography is labeled with DOT, O*NET, and Holland Code. Title listings by GOE are available.

Q. How would I file career biographies in my vertical file system?
A. It would depend on how you use your vertical file system. You can file them (using information printed on each biography for easy reference) by Cluster, DOT, O*Net, Holland Code / SOC, or alphabetically by title or by series. The unbound career biographies are completely flexible to suit your needs.
